Licensing and certification

Some goods are sensitive, strategic, and / or subject to control; these goods can require a license or certificate in order to be traded internationally. GTD helps companies understand and obtain the correct documentation to move their goods, as well as ensuring their internal records and processes comply with the relevant authorities’ requirements

Overview

Some goods traded internationally are sensitive, strategic, and subject to control; these goods can require an export license prior to shipment. Licensing depends on:

Correct classification of products is an essential part of customs compliance and no more so than in the case of licensing i.e. the tariff code and destination will dictate whether an export license is a prerequisite to trade.

GTD helps UK companies navigate sanctions lists and understand the kind of export license their product(s) need e.g. Standard Individual Export Licence – SIEL (specific items to specific destinations); Open General Export Licence – OGEL (pre-approved for low-risk goods/destinations, repeated use); Open Individual Export Licence – OIEL (multiple shipments to multiple destinations); Temporary Export Licence (goods leaving the country temporarily e.g. exhibitions, repairs).

We also often support the company to apply for the correct licenses via UK SPIRE and then ensure they are maintaining the correct documentation and records so that they can demonstrate full compliance in the event of an audit by the Department of Business and Trade (DBT).

Missing licenses or permits (for items like electronics, chemicals, or food); attempted import of restricted or prohibited goods; and unclear Incoterms can all cause disputes and delays.

GTD supports companies to resolve some of these issues and more.
